‘Big Surprise’ is the debut release from Plymouth based blues and soul singer Becca Langsford. At only 21 years old, she has a voice which carries a lot of weight across the twelve songs that make up this release.
With influences ranging from Patsy Cline, Joni Mitchell and Carol King to Taj Mahal and Ray Charles, Langsford has a powerful voice and style that is perfectly honed and recorded on this release. With support from a number of musicians, she tackles songs from the 1920’s to the present day, with a sound that is both retro and modern. Songs by such names as Charlie Patton, Bonnie Raitt, and Blind Willie Johnson are all tackled with aplomb, whilst the talented Vince Lee does most of the heavy lifting on backing vocals, guitar, dobro, double bass, Ukulele, Lapsteel, Piano, and percussion, there is also a full brass section which adds a lot of colour to many of the songs.
Although this album is designed to showcase the vocal talents of Becca Langsford, this is a group effort, with a number of genres, from the slide guitar driven arrangement of Blind Willie Johnson’s ‘Lord, I just can’t keep from crying’ to the soulful showcase that is ‘(You don’t) Miss your water until your well runs dry’ being a highlight of the album.
At only 21 year old, Becca Langsford has a bright future ahead of her, and if this release is anything to go by, her future releases will be well worth waiting for.
