Poem – Sunlight in an empty room

hopper.sun-empty-room_thumb[2]Sunlight in an empty room

Edward Hopper’s one last unfulfilled ambition,

was to capture the quality of light in an empty room.

That unseen light, that caresses the furniture,

the smiles in old photographs,

that allows the dust to dance.

That light that draws the gentle lines of life

on a favourite face,

that illuminates the difference between memory and fact,

that we take for granted,

We all aim for that illumination.

Something which takes the ordinary,

and makes it glow, makes it live.

Sunlight in an empty room,

exists for its own sake,

the sun does not care for who enjoys it,

it just is, and continues to be.
